Review Python Projects

Having little to no previous experience with TurtleBlocks/Python and coding in general, I learned so much new information. I went from being so confused by the colors, directions, and numbers to understanding the different functions.

In TurtleBlocks, I went from being perplexed by it to understanding how to make the turtle do what I want, in a certain color, and how to create a function that would repeat if necessary, rather than having to write all the instructions out again. It definitely took a lot of troubleshooting and time, but once I figured it all out, it was really rewarding. For TurtleBlocks, I ended up (somewhat) figuring out how to write my name out. I think TurtleBlocks is a really useful way to introduce students to coding with no previous experience (like me). It was helpful to have a basic understanding before "graduating" to Python Blocks.

I actually preferred Python Blocks to TurtleBlocks. It felt more intuitive to me, even if it did end up being more confusing. I liked having more control over the commands and felt like I was truly coding, even if I did end up with an error half the time! I liked being able to make an abstract shape, that part of the project was really fun to play around with.

In terms of using it in the classroom, as a (hopefully) future English teacher, I do wonder how I would implement coding into the work my students do. I liked the idea of using them to control robots for a play, but besides that, I think I would have to get really creative with incorporating it. As our world becomes increasingly digital, I do think it would be something important to tune into and have my students do. It will just take some extra brainstorming.

In regards to what I want to know more, I still think I can learn a lot about CS and CT so I believe that portion will just take time. I feel much better than I did when I started, but in order to use it in the classroom, I will have to continue to learn (not that I can't do that alongside my students as well). Currently, I am a little burnt out when it comes to coding, but I think after a short hiatus, I will be motivated and excited to continue learning about it! I am so happy we were able to get the time to do this work and that I was able to begin my journey in coding.

  1. Annie,
    Thanks for this post.
I have seen ELA teachers do some really interesting things with coding with their students. Here is one project that one of my former colleagues put together: http://tomliamlynch.com/2018/04/26/an-easy-way-to-start-coding-in-english-class-and-beyond/
Take a look and let me know what you think.
